You have one (1) year from the date of course completion to submit your concealed handgun permit application.

10. How do I apply for a permit?

There are two ways to apply for a concealed handgun permit. The preferred method is to apply online using the following website: http://chp-web.dps.louisiana.gov/ via the State Police website . This method is faster, cheaper
( no notary required ), and easier ( no certified check or money order ). Alternatively, you can download the paper application from the State Police Website, have it notarized for a nominal fee, and mail in your application and documentation along with a certified check or money order. This method will take longer, will cost approximately $20 more, and you have to pay up front.

If you need help filling out your online application, Kuyper Consulting created a video detailing the steps necessary to fill out your application.

11. Do I need to be an experienced shooter to take this course?

No, our course is designed for both new shooters and experienced shooters.

12. What can I carry?

You can carry a revolver or semiautomatic pistol of any type. In short, any firearm that meets the legal definition of a handgun. The permit does not specify how many handguns you can carry, so you can carry a single handgun, or a primary and backup handgun, or as many as you can conceal.

13. How long is the course?

The state of Louisiana mandates a minimum 9 hour course for concealed handgun permits. We typically start at 9am and end between 5pm and 6pm. Sometimes things move faster, but expect to be there until 5pm.

14. Do I need a concealed handgun permit to keep a handgun in my vehicle?

No. Under most circumstances, carrying a handgun in a motor vehicle is legal in Louisiana. We suggest that you refer to Louisiana Revised Statutes (L.R.S.) Title 14 Sections 95; 95.1; 95.2; 95.6; 95.7; 95.8. Information on these statutes can be obtained from http://www.legis.state.la.us or in the “Laws and Rules” section of the LSP page http://www.lsp.org/handguns.html

No, there is no written test. To complete the course successfully, you must demonstrate that you can safely shoot your handgun and you must fire a minimum of twelve (12) rounds with a reload at distances of 6, 10, and 15 feet. You must be able to put twelve (12) rounds into the black of a B-27 lifesize silhouette target at each distance.

16. When and how should I pay for the course?

We accept payment on the day of the course, or you can prepay if you wish. We accept cash, checks, and credit cards.
